New Book Explores Effects of Climate Change on Island Life

NAHA CITY, Okinawa – In his new book Island Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunities for Okinawa and other Pacific Islands in a Globalized World (published by Trafford Publishing), author Hiroshi Kakazu examines small island sustainability with a focus on the Pacific, especially the islands of Okinawa.

The book explores socioeconomic characteristics, development issues and policies, networking of island societies, culture, human resources, agriculture and tourism in a globalizing world.

An excerpt from Island Sustainability:

“Wherever I am thrown, I stand on my own will.” This old motto of the Isle of Man becomes a sort of paradigmatic key that the book offers readers in order to facilitate small islands sailing among the ambiguities and contradictions hiding in between the concepts and the realities of what is usually called “sustainable development.

“I have pursued this topic for nearly half century because I am a genuine islander,” Kakazu says. “I wrote several books, taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels and organized various international forums on the subject. Nissology is my life’s work.”
