Sequans-Powered Mobile WiMAX USB Dongle Now Qualified by UQ Commuications for Use on its Network

CHICAGO, 4G World — September 15, 2009 — Sequans Communications, a leading WiMAX chipmaker, announced that I-O Data Device’s WMX-U01 USB dongle, powered by Sequans’ Mobile WiMAX® system-on-chip technology, has been approved by UQ Communications for use on its network. The device, which was designed by Mitsumi and qualified in collaboration with NetIndex, represents the latest in Mobile WiMAX internet access devices, featuring compact size, low power consumption, and high performance. With the approval by UQ Communications, a major Japanese WiMAX operator, consumers in Japan can now experience the excitement of Mobile WiMAX service through one of the industry’s most advanced user devices.

The device is powered by Sequans’ award-winning SQN1130 system-on-chip, a WiMAX Forum Certified™ solution that delivers industry-leading high throughput and low power consumption. The chip’s high performance is a function of Sequans’ patent-pending mimoMAX™ technology, which combines a maximum likelihood decoder on the downlink with two transmitters on the uplink, a feature unique to Sequans that enables uplink MIMO for significantly improved link budget and cell coverage.

The Sequans-based USB dongle was manufactured by Mitsumi Electric. Sequans collaborated with Mitsumi and Netindex, a communications technology integrator, on testing and certification. I-O Data Device, Inc., a top-tier provider of computer peripherals, offers the device to UQ Communications customers.

“Sequans is thrilled to be at the heart of this device, and excited about enabling UQ Communications to ramp its WiMAX service in Japan,” said Georges Karam, Sequans CEO. “Perhaps nowhere else in the world is mobile broadband as widely embraced as in Japan, and we’re proud that our chips are making this possible. We’re grateful for the talent and efforts of Mitsumi and NetIndex in the development of the WMX-U01 USB dongle for I-O Data.”

The SQN1130 is found in dozens of WiMAX devices that are shipping in volume for numerous WiMAX deployments worldwide.
