Taking place in Hong Kong, the annual Melon Conference brings together science fiction writers and industry professionals from both China and the West to share, brainstorm and be inspired.

This year’s tent-pole theme will be “Digital Disruption and Opportunities in Science Fiction”. Bringing together established and aspiring writers, alongside industry professionals, the conference will focus on an array of top-of-mind topics facing the world of science fiction. Melon will also highlight how digital technologies are disrupting the science fiction industry while at the same time providing the industry new opportunities.

The Melon Sci-Fi Conference will include both an Industry Day and a Fan Day.

Industry Day will take place on April 19 at Eaton House. Key industry professionals and a wide range of writers and creative talent will be participating in a lively discussion.

Fan Day will take place on April 20 at The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong’s preeminent centre for higher learning.  Fans from across the territory and mainland China are looking forward to hear their favourite writers speak and share their creative journey.

“While the Chinese science fiction is making an effort to shine on the global stage, Melon HK looks to be one of the most suitable and effective platforms to showcase our potential to the world,” said acclaimed writer Hao Jingfang, Hugo-winning Chinese writer.

Andy Tian, CEO of live-video broadcasting platform, UpLive, mentioned, “Every genre within the media industry continues to be ripe for disruption, including the world of science fiction. We’re looking forward to joining the Melon Conference to discuss the key digital trends that are fundamentally changing science fiction publishing, filmmaking, TV and game development.”

Entertainment and media industry lawyer, Philip Qu also added, “Securing financing and distribution, and frankly, simply getting deals done in an ever-changing, digitally disrupted environment requires us to think and carefully discuss many of the issues of the day. Melon is a welcome addition to the science fiction industry as we contemplate and wrestle with the issues.”

The conference will include fireside chats, prepared presentations and panel discussions to discuss industry trends, the creative process and the future of one of the world’s most compelling industries.
