Prolexic Opens North Pole DDoS Scrubbing Center

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – (December 20, 2013) – Prolexic Technologies, the global leader in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection services, today announced that it has opened a new office and scrubbing center in the North Pole.

“We have a new client that has requested anonymity, but it is a global supplier and a household name the world over,” said Prolexic President, Stuart Scholly. “It appears that even in the remotest parts of the world, DDoS attacks have become a significant issue.”

The e-Commerce website operated by the secretive North Pole-based entity, which processes billions of orders, has been a common target for DDoS attacks. In 2013, attacks escalated, taking the site offline for days at a time and significantly disrupting workshop production. Site availability is especially critical due to the organization’s unique business model. While orders can be placed anytime, delivery is only available on one eve per year.

Prolexic’s new scrubbing center opened on November 1 and brings the total to five: North Pole, London, Hong Kong, San Jose, and Ashburn, Va. “Prolexic is growing rapidly and to be quite honest, the North Pole was not a location we considered for expansion, but it’s not often such a high profile client requests your services,” said Scholly.

Despite coming online only a few weeks ago, Prolexic’s North Pole scrubbing center has already mitigated large amounts of attack traffic to keep the mission-critical website online. According to Scrubbing Center Manager, Inna Openslae, the majority of DDoS attacks have been launched using a sophisticated toolkit known as Grinchruin. The Prolexic Security Engineering and Response Team (PLXsert) is currently authoring a Grinchruin Threat Report and white paper.

Despite its success, opening a state-of-the-art DDoS monitoring and mitigation facility in the North Pole has posed a number of significant issues. “Well, staffing is obviously very difficult,” moaned Openslae. “The fun of reindeer racing wears off quickly, frostbite is not unheard of, and total darkness on weekends can put a damper on things.”

The CEO of the North Pole supplier was surprisingly relaxed with the big delivery date fast approaching. “Requests are flooding in and with Prolexic’s DDoS mitigation, I am happy to report the website has not experienced any downtime. These last few days are always a little stressful, but everything will work out. It always does. Ho Ho Ho!”
