AT&T announced a wide range of new LTE based devices at CES. It demonstrated that it is serious about LTE and has the clout to get device vendors including Samsung, HTC, Pantech and Nokia behind its strategy. Impressively, it has also launched a wider range in terms of price points, operating systems and form factors than Verizon, which launched much earlier. Verizon will have some work to do to catch up, especially at the low end.

The Lumia 900 represents Nokia’s first serious step into the US with its Windows Phone line. While the Lumia 710 was announced earlier and launches this week, it represents a low-end offering and isn’t the best advertisement for Windows Phone on Nokia. While a capable device, it lacks some of the features that will set Nokia apart in the Windows Phone space, but the Lumia 900 rectifies that. It offers a large and high quality screen, LTE connectivity, a front-facing camera and a number of other features not seen either on T-Mobile’s 710 or on the Lumia 800 which has already launched in Europe.

Having replaced its own Symbian platform with Microsoft’s, this is essentially a restart for the handset manufacturer, which has struggled to adjust to the new dynamics of the smartphone market following the launch of the iPhone in 2007. With Microsoft’s new mobile platform yet to take off and Nokia banking on Windows Phone it as its primary smartphone platform, the success of the devices will be critical to the future of both companies. Both companies therefore have much riding on the outcome of this launch.
