6WIND Achieves Additional Deployments in LTE Networks Supported by Strong Partner Ecosystem
PARIS, May 30, 2012 — 6WIND, the gold standard for software-defined networks, today announced that it has extended its lead as the #1 supplier of high-performance networking software for LTE infrastructure worldwide. The company’s 6WINDGate Mobile Edition software is now deployed in major LTE commercial networks in Asia, Europe and North America. As an example, 6WINDGate currently serves 80% of Japan’s LTE users, thanks to recent deployments in products from multiple Telecom Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs) who provide equipment for service providers throughout Japan. Additional tier-1 TEMs have recently selected 6WINDGate for their new generations of LTE core and access equipment, strengthening 6WIND’s undisputed leadership position in this market.
According to a recent report by Maravedis, the worldwide LTE subscriber base reached 12 million by the end of 2011, with a 92% growth rate during the fourth quarter. Maravedis projects that there will be 469 million LTE subscribers by 2016, so LTE service providers worldwide are challenged to build out their network capacity with acceptable Return on Investment, while ensuring that their networks are fully scalable in anticipation of traffic growth driven by new LTE devices and the next “killer app.” At the same time, their overall network architectures must be highly flexible to support the delivery of advanced, subscriber-specific services that maximize overall network monetization, optimize Average Revenue per User (ARPU) and minimize subscriber churn.
The 6WINDGate software enables TEMs to provide equipment that addresses these challenges by maximizing network performance, ensuring unlimited scalability across blades or racks and accelerating advanced networking features such as policy enforcement and security.
“Our advanced technology and the widespread adoption of the 6WINDGate Mobile Edition Software led to 6WIND receiving the 4GWE Wireless LTE Visionary Award from Technology Marketing Corporation (TMC) in late 2010,” said Eric Carmès, CEO of 6WIND. “With 224 operators worldwide committed to launch LTE service in addition to the 54 networks active at the end of 2011, according to Maravedis, we expect deployments of 6WINDGate to increase significantly during the next few quarters. Beyond the technology strengths of the 6WINDGate software itself, OEMs adopt our solution because it is supported by a comprehensive ecosystem of compatible, industry-leading products. We appreciate the support that 6WIND receives from a wide range of partners, so that we can together provide our mutual customers with pre-integrated, joint solutions that are proven to be interoperable and best-in-class.”
6WIND’s partner ecosystem comprises suppliers of board-level products, processor platforms, operating systems and middleware. This represents a critical advantage for OEMs who must minimize both time-to-market and development risk for their new, complex networking products.
“The 6WINDGate packet processing software is a key element of our Deep Packet One platform for DPI,” said Peter Marek, Director x86 Solutions at Advantech’s Networks & Communications Group (TWSE: 2395.TW). “By accelerating the performance of the networking subsystem while maximizing the CPU resources available for applications, it enables us to jointly provide an industry-leading solution for LTE applications such as the Policy Enforcement and Charging Function (PCEF) running on a dedicated ATCA blade or co-located appliance.”
“We are delighted to be part of 6WIND’s success in LTE infrastructure,” said Chuck Tato, Director of Product Marketing, Infrastructure and Networking Group at Broadcom. “Several of their customers are running 6WINDGate on our XLR or XLP processors which are architected to deliver high performance on networking equipment for mobile infrastructure applications. 6WIND has provided optimized support for our platforms for many years and we look forward to continued joint success in the future.”
“As an early member of the Cavium PACE ecosystem, 6WIND has provided critical packet processing software for many LTE infrastructure OEMs using our market-leading OCTEON®, OCTEON Plus and OCTEON II processors,” said YJ Kim, General Manager, Infrastructure Processor Group at Cavium. “With their recent announcement of support for OCTEON III, we are confident that our new and existing customers will continue to benefit from their industry-leading software.”
“6WIND is the clear technology leader in high-performance packet processing software,” said Clive Partridge, General Manager of Network Technologies at Metaswitch Networks. “The combination of 6WINDGate with Metaswitch’s industry-leading control plane software provides a complete software solution that allows equipment vendors to build optimized mobile infrastructure network elements based on commodity multicore CPUs.”
“Many telecom equipment manufacturers leverage the pre-integrated 6WIND-Qosmos solution for high-performance Network Intelligence,” said Thibaut Bechetoille, CEO of Qosmos. “In today’s highly competitive market, leading OEMs prefer to focus all their resources on developing complete solutions and rely on specialists such as Qosmos and 6WIND to provide key enabling technology.”
“As the leading supplier of ATCA solutions with the industry’s broadest range of packet processing capabilities and 175 wireless infrastructure customer wins, Radisys has enjoyed a long standing partnership with 6WIND,” said Keate Despain, Vice President / General Manager of Platforms at Radisys. “Our customers use 6WINDGate for all of our key 40G assets, including Broadcom® XLP, Cavium Octeon® II and the latest generation Intel® processors, enabling seamless transitions from previous processor generations – a confirmation of Radisys’ and 6WIND’s commitment to portability.”
“LTE customers can have confidence that their applications running 6WINDGate Mobile Edition packet processing software with Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating platform are highly reliable and secure,” said Gus Robertson, Vice President, Global Business Development at Red Hat. “Red Hat Enterprise Linux with 6WINDGate software support offers carrier-grade reliability and performance for mobile applications where zero downtime is key.”
“6WIND’s newly announced support for our KeyStone II platform represents an important addition to our ecosystem because of their worldwide presence in the LTE infrastructure market,” said Sameer Wasson, Business Manager, Wireless Base Station Infrastructure at Texas Instruments. “Our collaboration with 6WIND gives our customers quality software support to quickly and easily develop high performance applications.”
Building on the success of its Mobile Edition software, on March 26th 6WIND introduced the Cloud Edition version to apply its proven, unique technology to address critical performance and scalability challenges faced by cloud infrastructure providers. Available now, 6WINDGate Cloud Edition is already being adopted by suppliers of both physical and virtual networking appliances in data center applications.
