RFID Transforms Customer Service, Retailing and Consumer Goods

c4news | 2010-09-27 00:02

First time round, it ended in tears. Six years ago, some of the leading consumer goods companies and some of the retailers they supplied said that billions of RFID tags would shortly be applied to pallets and cases. However, it transpired that this was tricky to do at the UHF frequency chosen and, although the RFID suppliers and consumer goods companies lost several hundreds of millions of dollars trying to make it happen, it only benefitted the retailers. And the retailers were very reluctant to invest much money or even staff training into the opportunity. Fast forward to today and only a modest number of pallets and cases are tagged but, at last, a price rise for the tags has stuck and the RFID tag makers can see losses reducing even if major sales remain elusive. The system integrators have made a little money on the enterprise throughout.

RFID Europe Attracts Considerable Interest

c4news | 2010-09-18 21:16

The forthcoming RFID Europe event in Cambridge UK 28-29 September has attracted considerable interest due to the selective coverage of particularly promising sectors and the appreciable number of end users present. Indeed, the rapidly growing delegate lineup includes people from Argentina, Austria, Belarus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy and Korea – just to take the beginning of the alphabet. They are even flying in from Singapore, the USA and Romania. Exhibition space is nearly sold out at 22 exhibitors with only one exhibitor space remaining.

Breakthroughs with Sensing in the Human Body

c4news | 2010-03-25 00:54

Holst Centre and others are working on body area networking to monitor vital signs, control drug delivery according to need and otherwise progress towards bionic man and woman and care of the disabled and elderly. Unfortunately cutting into your body to change batteries brings with it a significant percentage of mortalities, not just pain and infection. Energy harvesting within the body is potentially helpful but biobatteries and thermoelectric generators provide only weak amounts of electricity in such applications.
