Latest ICT innovations depend on IPv6
[Singapore – Monday, 14 June 2010]
Amidst the wealth of technological innovation showcased at CommunicAsia
2010, it is clear that IPv6 transition is arriving at an ideal time.
These exciting ICT developments, including FTTx, IPTV, Mobile
Broadband, NGN, and Wireless Technologies such as WiMAX.
These technologies would not be possible without the Internet, and more
specifically, the globally unique identifying numbers known as IP
addresses.
The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) free pool of IPv4
addresses is expected to run out in mid-2011. IPv6 is the new protocol
developed to ensure the continued growth of the Internet. A large
amount of IPv6 address space has already been distributed to networks
globally, with many service and content providers already deploying
IPv6 within their infrastructures.
Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) Director General Paul
Wilson said CommunicAsia is a great opportunity to speak with vendors
across the region. “Each year, we get a feeling for what will be
possible during the following year in terms of technological advances
that will benefit Internet users across the Asia Pacific,
“It’s also important to remember that a major expansion of the Internet
is required for much of these innovations to come to fruition, which is
the benefit of worldwide adoption of IPv6,” Mr Wilson said.

APNIC’s stand partners at CommunicAsia 2010 are the DotAsia
Organisation (DotAsia) and the Asia & Pacific Internet Association
(APIA). DotAsia has played a major part in the establishment and
funding of several Asia Pacific Community Projects, including the
co-sponsorship of the highly successful Information Society Innovation
Fund (ISIF) grant program.
DotAsia Vice President of Community Relations Ching Chiao said that
fostering community development is critical during this time of
transition. “We are happy that this year more and more SMEs and
individuals have adopted the .asia web identity,” Mr Chiao said.
To encourage local uptake of the domain, DotAsia along with local
partners Singapore Network Information Centre Pte Ltd (SGNIC), and Web
Commerce Communications Limited (WebNIC) are offering a special bundle
for domain names. The special bundle of “1 .ASIA + 1 .SG” will retail
at up to US$20 via WebNIC, a .SG and .ASIA accredited registrar.
“This year at CommunicAsia we are also showcasing our community
projects, which are driven by every registered .asia domain. This
enables us to give back to the community we serve, and this should make
many .asia owners proud,” Mr Chiao said.
ISIF is a small grants program aimed at supporting technological
ingenuity and developing Internet communities in the Asia Pacific
region.
APNIC is holding consultations with CommunicAsia attendees who wish
discuss any concerns or issues associated with networking or the
transition to IPv6. Consultations will be held in multiple languages at
different times during the event.
